We may be hardwired to appreciate poetry: Study

Human cerebrum might be hardwired to acknowledge verse regardless of the possibility that it battles to grasp its significance, another review recommends. Scientists at Bangor University in the UK have shown that we do undoubtedly seem to have an oblivious valuation for lovely development.

"Verse is a specific kind of abstract expression that passes on emotions, musings and thoughts by highlighting metric imperatives, rhyme and similar sounding word usage," said Professor Guillaume Thierry at Bangor University.

Analysts examined whether we can value the melodic sound of verse autonomous of its scholarly importance.

To address this question they made sentence test sets that either acclimated or abused idyllic development principles of Cynghanedd - a customary type of Welsh verse.

These sentences were haphazardly exhibited to study members; every one of whom were local welsh speakers however had no earlier information of Cynghanedd beautiful shape. Mobile Number database provider

At first members were made a request to rate sentences as either "great" or "not great" contingent upon regardless of whether they discovered them tastefully satisfying to the ear.

The review demonstrated that the members' brains verifiably ordered Cyngahanedd-standard sentences as sounding "great" contrasted with sentences disregarding its development rules.

India says it plans to measure whether quake shrank Everest

The Indian government has said it plans to measure the height of Mount Everest for a second time to assess whether it changed as a result of the 2015 Nepal earthquake.

Surveyor-General Swarna Subba Rao said an expedition would be sent to the world's highest mountain in two months.

Nepalese officials, however, told the BBC that no agreement had been reached on allowing an Indian team access.

Satellite data has indicated the quake impact reduced the height of the peak.

The most widely recognised height, 8,848m (29,028ft), came from an Indian survey 62 years ago.

Scientists have said that the height of a swathe of the Himalayas dropped by around one metre shortly after the 7.8 magnitude Nepal earthquake.

Women's March movement: What's next and can the momentum last?

WASHINGTON — Now that the Women’s March on Washington is over, women like 32-year-old Jacqueline Glass will determine whether it marked a historic one-day demonstration or the start of a widespread resistance to Donald Trump's presidency.

Glass was among the more than 2 million people who came out in a show of global protest — from Washington to Sydney, Australia. Now women’s groups and civil rights organizations, such as Planned Parenthood and EMILY's List, are scrambling to harness that energy by enlisting more supporters and encouraging women to run for local public office.

Glass, an African American who recently settled in Norfolk, Va., after retiring from the military, has felt off ever since the election, when her 10-year-old son woke up crying. “I don’t want him feeling like he’s in a place where he’s up against the world. This is America,” she said. “I was having these sinking feelings about the world and really down for a period of time,” she said.

The feeling became so strong Glass took to Google, which led her to VoteRunLead, a New York nonprofit that grooms women for public office. She's now researching local commissions and boards in which to get active. “I’m taking these tiny steps toward an ultimate goal,” she said, which is to run for U.S. Senate.

Deadly insurgent attacks dim hopes for talks, spur regional worries

KABUL — Just one month ago, Afghanistan’s moribund peace process seemed to be sputtering to life. Taliban leaders had welcomed delegations from Kabul to their offices in Qatar, and the governor and police chief of Kandahar province had hosted a large regional gathering, declaring that the 16-year conflict had to be resolved through talks and offering a haven for Taliban negotiators and family members.

Today, that hopeful moment has been eclipsed by a one-day blitz of terrorist attacks in Kabul and two other cities on Jan. 10 that left 50 people dead. Two attacks were claimed by the Taliban. The third, an explosion at another gathering hosted by top officials in Kandahar, took the lives of five visiting Emirati diplomats. Amid outraged recriminations from United Arab Emirates officials, Afghan security agencies launched an investigation aided by NATO, and dozens of people were arrested this week.

The circumstances of that bombing remain murky, and the Taliban have repeatedly denied responsibility for the blast, in which sophisticated explosives were detonated remotely after being hidden in a sofa inside a highly secured official compound. The mystery set off a flurry of conspiracy theories pointing to Iran, Pakistan and factional disputes among Kandahari leaders.

Bill Perry Is Terrified. Why Aren’t You?How an 89-year-old cold warrior became America’s nuclear conscience.

At this naked moment in the American experiment, when many people perceive civilization on the verge of blowing up in some metaphorical sense, there is an elderly man in California hoping to seize your attention about another possibility.

It is that civilization is on the verge of blowing up in a non-metaphorical sense.

William J. Perry is 89 now, at the tail end of one of his generation’s most illustrious careers in national security. By all rights, the former U.S. secretary of Defense, a trained mathematician who served or advised nearly every administration since Eisenhower, should be filling out the remainder of his years in quiet reflection on his achievements. Instead, he has set out on an urgent pilgrimage.

Bill Perry has become, he says with a rueful smile, “a prophet of doom.”

His life’s work, most of it highly classified, was nuclear weapons—how to maximize the fearsome deterrent power of the U.S. arsenal, how to minimize the possibility that the old Soviet arsenal would obliterate the United States and much of the planet along the way. Perry played a supporting role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, during which he went back to his Washington hotel room each night, fearing he had only hours left to live. He later founded his own successful defense firm, helped revolutionize the American way of high-tech war, and honed his diplomatic skills seeking common ground on security issues with the Soviets and Chinese—all culminating as head of the Pentagon in the early years after the end of the Cold War.
